70's snacks bento

Hi there! Today's bento is a nostalgic trip down memory lane, to some healthy light bites I recall from being a child in the 1970's. Under the mango heart is a whole grain sammie with crunchy peanut butter, banana slices and sunflower seeds, and to the right, cream cheese filled celery is dotted with golden raisins and walnuts.

Vanilla yogurt with berries and mango in there, as well. This bento conjured some delightful sense-memories of being in the kitchen and experimenting with the simple recipes in children's cookbooks of the time. Here is the granola-recipe page from the cookbook "Love at First Bite." This was a favorite of mine at around age six...my greasy fingerprints can be found next to the recipe for Homemade Potato Chips!

The garden is so vivid right now, mostly with iris...roses are all in bud with the pink rambler offering the first blooms...

What a pretty bento Jenn! You have got the feel and colour of the 70s just so. I love the illustrations in the cookbook too. How wonderful that you still have it. Who was or were the author/s? I would love to find it in a library here. But googling the title all I get is vampire twilight stuff.

Hi there Carolyn! What a cool comment, thank you. Yes, I feel lucky to have this link to my earliest kitchen experiments, and everything about this book, from its goofy-naturalistic illustrations to handwritten pages evokes/transmits this decade like magic :)

I can only find it one place, via Abe Books: http://www.abebooks.com/Love-First-Bite-Cooper-Jane-Alfred/731865957/bd

Happy to order you a copy as this seller only ships to USA--let me know :) Happy cooking this weekend, friend...

The iconic Mrs. Grossman's heart stickers! I think I still have the bears and the stuff to dress him up too.
My pink climber is blooming all up top too, where the sun shines warmest. I'm so excited to be in the garden these days!!

Jenn that's so very kind of you to offer to post Love at First Bite. I couldn't find it in a library here but using your citation and Booko found it for $9.00 and free international postage! When it gets here I'll be thinking of you in your younger self cooking all sorts in your Mum's kitchen. (((-:

Hi Sheri! Iconic, thats the word...tailismanic, too :) I remember the teddy bears, and saw a rainbow set in the store the other day and was thrilled that the company had kept the design just the same.

My first David Austin rose to burst into bloom did so overnight, a clear pink "Mary Rose"--woohoo! Enjoy the glorious weekend :D
