pink watermelon bento

Today's bento for a summery warm afternoon features watermelon "flowers", Thai basil duck, red cabbage with chili oil, green methi leaves...and a purple sweet potato kitty (many thanks to a sweet bento pal--I love this new cutter!) and mini musubi, one with fresh basil, the other lavender tinted with a magical pastel furikake sent by another sweet bento buddy (many thanks, you know who!).

Some interesting okra with deep burgundy skin from the farmer's market, cherries and garden flowers, including my favorite pink rose also inside the magewappa.

This amazing hydrangea is blooming in a friend's garden...I've been enjoying its ever-changing play of violet, lavender, ivory and green tints this week:

Happy Thursday afternoon!

Wow, you already have okra? I can't wait for them to show up at our farmers market, they taste so good.

I bought a few cute dishes this past weekend, and thought of all the cute dishes you use in your bento. Thanks for the inspiration!

this one is magical! i love all the shades of purple, there must be 50 shades just in the beautifully light-dappled background textile alone! i'm digging your mini musubi kick and how you manage to still keep even rice-y meals so LIGHT with all the fresh greens and flowers :-)

Hi there Sonoma Bento, how are things? This was the best tasting okra I've ever had--crisp and slightly sweet. Glad hubby noticed it at the farmer's market and said, let's try this!
Can't wait to see the cute dishes in your upcoming bentos :)

so glad you like, gamene! I'm loving all shades of purple of late :) thanks so much...and do you have any of those fried chicken rolls still available? seriously, your bentos have made me so hungry yesterday and today!

Amazing shot! It looks like a piece of art! The colors and flowers and everything is beautiful! You are such and inspiration. I'm working my way into it.

I really enjoy watching the hydrangea too, we don't have too many around here.

*blushing* thanks so much, Lyndsey! An honor to read--I'm inspired by your gorgeous photos and zestful, creative approach to cooking!

The hydras are really exuberant this year--apparently they liked being blanketed under record snows this winter and have emerged massive and full of blooms:)

Wow Izumi, I'm blown away by your compliment! They are really magical flowers and happily bloom for a long while, sharing their mutable beauty for weeks. Have a great weekend with I hope warm, pretty weather :)

What a beautifully soft looking bento! I love the colors. The hydrangeas are gorgeous (I'm jealous we don't have any!) and of course, the kitty is cute as always. :)

Hi Judy--yes! These were pretty large chunks of watermelon and as I ate them, all sweet and melon-musical, I thought...it must be summer! (even if not officially, just yet)...thank you and may your weekend be an inspired one :)
