persian sandwich bento

Hi bento pals! We recently visited a wonderful Persian bakery and market in our area called Nemooheh. They are renowned for a rich selection of Persian sweets, including baklavas in several honeyed nut combinations and refined, golden shapes.

Nemooneh also carries a full range of Persian groceries, including pickles, spices and flavored waters, nuts and dried fruit...

Some luscious pastries unwrapped at home:

Today's bento was inspired by subtle and exotic items from this shop, including spicy "torshi" or vegetable pickles which I blended with thick Greek yogurt to make a spread for a leg of lamb and tomato sandwich on Barbari bread. Dill and green olives, romaine, dolmeh and scallions also in the bento. Lunch ends on a sweet note with fresh green figs and almond baklava.

Jamison captured this lovely image of a butterfly visiting a bright pink zinnia in our garden. Zinnia have been wonderful attractors of both butterflies and hummingbirds this summer. Have a great weekend, happy cooking!

  1. I really like Jamison's capture of the butterfly and lovely Zinnia! Butterflies never sit still long enough for me to get a good shot! :)

Another regional delight...sounds so delicious and so pretty to feast my eyes on. I sure needed to look at something nice like this after the busy, stressfull week that I've had. All I can say is TGIF! Thanks! :D

Hope you have a wonderful weekend Jenn.

  5. Oooh, the baklavas looks really tempting. And the market looks inviting with all the yummy deserts and waters... I am entranced by the beautiful butterfly Jamison took. Her wings look like they have some magical blue stardust. Resplendent is the word that comes to mind. Thanks for your wonderful post, Jenn!

  6. Your delightful juxtapostion of Persian cuisine and Bento just tickles my fancy!... and that you used that fabulous bowl to join them together is just styling brilliance. World fusion chefs have nothing on you dear Jenn!

Cheers to Jamison's butterfly as well, my shutter button is just not that steady for such a wonderful capture.

  8. Hi Jenn! Tempting is the word--they were like little edible jewels, crunchy-chewy with cardamom, nuts and honey.

Your description of the beautiful butterfly does her justice! Hope you'll enjoy some magic and stardust sprinkled on your day...hugs :D

  11. Hope your painting went well today! My project was making fabric covered accoustical panels for my new meeting rooms at the university. Having fun with bright colors by using sheets from Crate and Barrel. I think you will like the combos, one set in spicy reds and the other in blues and purples.

  13. Why must you tempt me so? Baklavas are my favorite and I don't have the ingredients to make any. The sandwich looks very interesting (delicious) as well. Great pictures as usual!
