Hi bento friends! This weekend featured some colorful and summery foods and activities. The farmer's market offered a wealth of sunny tomatoes, fragrant cantaloupes and these tiny eggplants, just a little larger than my thumb:
Pretty French lavender bunches with a festive Provencal air:
Antique textiles, full of charm and delicate details...I could not resist the flower-embroidered scallop-edged piece on the right!
For the first time I came across a vendor selling Japanese ceramics, fans, chopsticks...yay, bento stuffs!
I added a sky blue crane to my collection and also some natural-finish, carved chopsticks...
Hibiscus from a Virginia nursery:
Walking home past the house of Mellow Cats...
We went to a dear friend's birthday celebration on Saturday (Happy Birthday, Chris!)
Grilled lobster was a special treat, lovely with grilled corn...
We were lucky to take home some of the grilled lobster, which I made today into a salad with mayo and spicy serrano-ginger dressing from Wisteria Gardens (our favorite market vendor for fresh herbs and micro greens) and pink grapefruit:
Dinner (and lunch on Monday) will be a bento for two with Light Summer Soba Noodles with Chicken, Vegetables, and Fresh Lemon-Sesame Sauce. The recipe is Maki's and comes from her new column for the Japan Times. After reading the delicious combination of flavors, I had to try it!
Cooling cucumber and green beans, a mellow sesame paste, dashi and soy dressing brightened with lemon, shrimp and juicy local tomatoes make for a nourishing, refreshing and delicious meal, one I'm sure to make again...
Have an enjoyable week ahead!
What a delightful post. The recipes sounds wonderful, I need to try that. I haven't grilled lobster tails yet. I am just getting to where I like lobster, so I'm still new at trying to prepare it. Nice Lavender! How beautiful are the Japanese fans and ceramics! Looks like it's right up your ally...and mine! :D
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to seeing all your beautiful photos when I'm pulling up your posts!
Have a wonderful week (my last one before I have to go back to work)!
I love the pictures of the textiles and fans - simply beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! Lovely colors!!!
ReplyDeleteI love those beautiful textiles too!
Those big prawns on your noodles made me drool :)~~~
Hi Lyndsey, always such a treat to read your comments! Ohhhh, lobster--a trip to Maine a couple of years back, staying with a family who gathered lobsters for a living on a tranquil bay...well, that turned us into fervent fans of this crustacean!
ReplyDeleteYes, so cool to see bento-esque items at the market, would have been fun to walk around with you :)
Wishing you a wonderful week, too, as you prepare to return to work, hope its an extra fun and summery one!
Thanks so much Kuusou! Happy Monday :)
ReplyDeleteHi there Angeleyes! Come on over, we'll share some shrimp and soba :D
ReplyDeleteMini eggplants! How cute! I bought some at our farmer's market yesterday but they are not as cute (still tasty, though :)). That soba salad looks perfect! Have a good Monday :)
ReplyDeleteHi Carol! Thanks :D!
ReplyDeleteInterested to hear how you'll prep your eggplants...we purchased some nice large ones for roasting/stuffing...on a real eggplant kick right now and recently found out they are packed with a great variety of nutrients!
