Scallion Hearts Bento




This bento was made as color therapy for this cold January day! January feels like the longest month of the year to me, and I'm trying to be patient as my garden sleeps...to wait out the long weeks until the first signs of spring magically emerge.

Here's a closeup of the scallion hearts garnishing the smoked salmon and tobiko rolls:

Also in the bento: a stir-fry of red cabbage, burdock and carrots with chili oil, plus snow peas and beni shōga garnish. The sweet sidecar contains a ripe tangerine half, kiwi flowers and apricot slices...and the French macaroons:

I used the reliably cheerful Hello Kitty bento box for this one. I love its clear red color and carrying case, pictured here with an "Apolo Chocolat" by Meiji:

    Winter needs to happen,
    and January is for dreaming and planning of the garden.

    Ah, a wise perspective on this time of year, thank you...I love the idea of using this quiet time to plan and dream, and also the thought that the plants are resting deeply and perhaps dreaming of the green and colorful selves they will become in a few months time...

  15. Mmmm I want the salmon rolls! The stir-fried veggie looks so yummy too. The apollo choco takes me back to my childhood. There's only small size apollo at that time though. The Kitty carrying case is so "wafu" taste, and the red color bento box is well-matching with the beautiful foods! I love your bentos!

  17. That's correct! Wafu is classic Japanese style, not modern Japanese style. For example, textile of kimono, temple, shrine, and classic Japanese foods...sushi, soba, wagashi (wafu sweets) and so on. I'm so glad that you love Japanese foods. (^o^)
