Saturday was the last farmer's market for the season (that we'll be able to walk to, anyway). I've never seen leaves still on the peppers, as here:
Happy apple (in a shirt and tie!)
Cute terrier sporting a Halloween scarf:
We went back to Old Town Leesburg to explore some more--stopping this time for a late breakfast at the Leesburg Restaurant, in business since the mid 19th century. In the present, it features charmingly worn 1930's details throughout:
Tasty veggie omelet with zucchini and peppers and home fries....
Many colorful flowers in bloom, even as we enter November:
A white picket fence festooned with vibrant morning glories:
Delicate pink camellia
Lots of nostalgic pleasure to be found in a rambling antique shop with endless rooms to explore...
Copper terrier cookie cutters...hmmm, bento inspiration!
A nifty 1930's cookbook
Vintage kawaii--a hand embroidered ladybug with umbrella!
A plump guy...
Today's bento was inspired by this cute nibbler...a squirrel shaped pastry filled with spiced kabocha squash. Broccoli, chanterelle and baby bella mushrooms, market greens and a lady apple also for lunch.
Have a great week!
Such beautiful Fall colors! This weekend was our last farmers market within walking distance too. Love the squirrel pastry.. and love the idea of filling pastry with kabocha! I'll have to try that!
ReplyDeleteLoving the brilliant blue flowers. Everytime I come across cookie cutters I too think what could I do with them in my bento. The terrier cutter is unusual and oh so cute. But the cutest in your blog entry has got to be the squirrel! Both the real one and the squirrel pastry. Great idea those filled animal pastries. :)
ReplyDeleteAw, a squirrel pastry! Awesome. I like the look of that Metropolitan Cookbook--what kind of recipes were in it? Also, I like that the apple is wearing a tie and dress pants :)
ReplyDeleteHi Megg! Thanks! So, we'll both need to go farther afield for our market fixes :) This has been an autumn of squash and root veggie experiments (bento really encourages trying new foods, don't you think?) Kabocha is a new fav. Have a good evening...
ReplyDeleteHi dear cherry bento, thanks for your always thoughtful comments! Yes, cookie cutters are a great bento tool, should be fun to find a use for this one...looking forward to seeing how you'll use yours :D
ReplyDeleteHey there Carol! Glad you like my squirrel pastry...I also loved that Mr. Apple was dressed for the office :D
ReplyDeleteThe cookbook featured casseroles, cutlets, puddings, Anglo-American comfort food...
Wow, that squirrel pastry is so pretty! It must taste nice too. I love kabocha so much!

Jenn, you are so clever with your pastry art. Love the little squirrel sitting so happily in his bento. Your Fall is so bright and cheerful, it really makes me want to enjoy some east coast weather! Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Sheri, you are so good in pastry art, Jenn!! Love the squirrel pastry. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos as always!
Another phenomenal pastry! It takes a lot of foresight to know what the outcome will be with those pastries, you do it so well. Love the journey to the last market, some of my favorite farmers are done for the season too. But we do have yearround markets!
ReplyDeleteDon't know how you make that awesome squirrel pastry, but enjoy it so much to see your creative work :)

Hello Jenn,
ReplyDeleteWe are experiencing mid-to-high 70s this week and plenty of sunshine on the West Coast too! Makes the autumn leave just shine. Your squirrel is so adorable. The live ones in my neighborhood eat all my walnuts,,booo. Your pastry creations inspire me.. I'm thinking of a twist on a chicken or turkey pot pie. Hmm. Have a great week!
